What the 2024 ecobonus consists of
Let’s start with the basics: what is the 2024 ecobonus and what opportunities does it offer drivers? The ecobonus is an economic incentive put in place by the government to encourage the purchase of low-emission vehicles.
The cars on the road in Italy are getting older and older (the average age is 12 years and 6 months) and unlike the cars on sale today, they are much more polluting.
In addition to the economic aspect, therefore, sustainable mobility also comes into play here more than ever. Stimulating the replacement of the circulating car fleet can have a positive impact on air pollution caused by vehicle emissions.
What categories of vehicles does the subsidy apply to?
The ecobonus you can get varies depending on the emissions of the car you want to buy. Generally speaking, the less polluting your new car is, the higher the amount of the incentive will be:
- 6,000 to 13,750 euros for Electric Cars (with emissions between 0 and 20 g/km): This is the category of car that enjoys the highest ecoincentives. Certainly they are the least polluting cars in terms of emissions during use.
- From 4,000 to 10,000 euros (2,000 without scrapping) for Plug-in Hybrids (with emissions between 21 and 60g/km): That is, cars equipped with an endothermic engine and an electric one with a battery that can also be recharged through an external source, for example, a charging station.
- From 1,500 to 3,000 euros but only with scrapping for Internal Combustion Cars (with emissions between 61 and 135g/km): All cars equipped with an endothermic engine, whether gasoline, diesel or gas.
The incentive will be increased based on the simultaneous scrapping of your old car (with higher amounts the older the car to be scrapped) and also in case your ISEE is less than 30,000 euros per year.
In addition, for small businesses and companies engaged in transportation activities there are ecoincentives to purchase electric commercial vehicles or vans.
Who is eligible for the subsidy?
One of the most frequently asked questions is who is actually eligible for these incentives. Fortunately, the pool of people who can take advantage of the ecoincentives is wide: both private citizens and companies can apply for the 2024 ecobonus, and it is not always necessary to already have a polluting car to scrap.
There is also something new coming: the new eco-incentives defined by the government in recent weeks could come into effect by March. If what has been decided is confirmed and published in the Official Gazette, the value of the ecoincentives will also change according to the ISEE of the car buyer: with an ISEE of less than 30,000 euros, one will be entitled to a higher ecobonus.
Finally, it will be crucial to choose a vehicle that falls within the price ceilings set by the directive: 42,700 euros (including vat) for electrics, 54,900 euros (including vat) for plug-in hybrids and 42,700 euros (again including vat) for thermals falling in the third bracket.
How to apply for and obtain ecoincentives?
It is really very simple, because the dealer will take care of the procedure for obtaining the ecoincentives.
In fact, once you have chosen the vehicle you want to buy, the dealer will be able to offer you the purchase price already discounted according to the value of the ecobonus to which you are entitled: that is, according to the type of vehicle you are interested in and the possible scrapping of a polluting vehicle that is part of a “euro” category included in the ecoincentives.
It will then be the dealer himself who will take care of the procedure that will allow him to obtain the reimbursement of the ecobonus that he will have discounted to you from the purchase price. Specifically:
1. He will book, on a dedicated portal, the ecobonus for the vehicle you want to buy.
2. Once the reservation is made, it will recognize you the subsidy directly from the purchase price of the car.
3. Afterwards you will get the refund. In practice, this means that the incentive is an immediate rebate that is then refunded to the seller.
