Project Description/Summary

The main objective of this project was to implement a reliable network of publicly accessible charging stations for light-duty vehicles, enabling electric charging along the TEN-T road networks in Italy. The project achieved this goal through the deployment of 87 charging stations with a total of 440 charging points, each providing a minimum charging capacity of 150 kW. Each station had a minimum grid connection of 600 kVA, ensuring full operability and 24/7 availability for consumers. The project relies entirely on renewable electricity generated from solar and wind sources, contributing to the objectives of the European Green Deal by 2030.

Results

This Activity achieved the full-scale deployment of the high-power charging network foreseen under the “Free To Charge” project, ensuring a capillary coverage of the Italian TEN-T network. A total of 87 recharging stations were completed and put into operation, delivering 440 charging points (≥150 kW) powered by 77 new grid connections of at least 600 kVA.

Key achievements include:
Full deployment: all stations were installed, grid-connected and commissioned within the project eligibility period, ensuring 100% completion of the revised roll-out plan shared with CINEA. Strategic highway coverage: the stations are located along the main Italian motorway and extra-urban corridors, providing continuous coverage across the North-South and East-West axes of the TEN-T core and comprehensive networks. Infrastructure quality and accessibility: each site features safe access, dedicated parking bays, and full 24/7 public availability, guaranteeing interoperability and accessibility also for users with reduced mobility. Digital connectivity: all chargers are remotely monitored through the FreeToX digital backend, ensuring real-time control, fault detection, and transparent data sharing through the National Access Point (NAP). User services and transparency: each station provides multilingual on-site information, 24/7 customer assistance, and payment through standard POS or contactless systems, with clear, non-discriminatory pricing.
